Customs outage causes chaos, backups at airports usatoday

People returning home from the New Year's holiday weekend were being processed at international terminals by hand at some airports, resulting in long lines and short tempers. Travelers reported issues in Chicago, Boston, New York City, Baltimore, Miami and Atlanta, among others. The outage lasted for four hours, the Customs agency cbp.gov said in a statement late Monday, before the system was up and running again.

"I've never seen anything like it," [Michelle Sencibaugh, a K-12 teacher in St. Louis] told USA TODAY. "No one was giving us direction. They didn't tell us what was going on. It was just a herd of people."

Society

Germany sees 'overwhelming' sales of Hitler's Mein Kampf bbc

About 85,000 German-language copies of the anti-Semitic Nazi manifesto have been sold. Publisher Andreas Wirsching said "the figures overwhelmed us".

After Nazi Germany was defeated in 1945, the Allied forces handed the copyright to the state of Bavaria. Under German law copyright lasts for 70 years. While the Bavarian regional government held the copyright, reprinting of the book was banned. But the copyright expired a year ago.

The 60 adverts show pigs, cows and chickens with the slogan: "I'm ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual – Go Vegan.”

New Fox Show ‘The Mick’ Praises Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz: “I Should Get a Free Sub Every 10 Visits” lifenews v

The Mick revolves around irresponsible grifter Mackenzie “Mick” Murphy (Kaitlin Olson) who is forced to look after her niece and nephews after her sister is caught on federal fraud charges with her husband. The rest of the show just constantly puts Mick at odds with her equally obnoxious family members as they attempt to adapt to the situation. The icing on this awful cake would have to be this brief and meaningless reference to supporting Planned Parenthood.

Warning: The video clip is from the show and does a good job at representing the world. Mercifully, a transcript is provided in the article after the video so you don't need to watch it to get the point (though, unfortunately, the language isn't censored).

Basic Income

Finland launches universal basic income pilot of 560 Euros a month independent.co.uk

Two thousand people will receive 560 euros (£480) [~$580] every month for two years, without having to report whether they are seeking employment or how they are spending the money. This will be deducted from any benefits they are already receiving.

“It's highly interesting to see how it makes people behave,” said [government program employee] Mr Kangas. “Will this lead them to boldly experiment with different kinds of jobs? Or, as some critics claim, make them lazier with the knowledge of getting a basic income without doing anything?”

And after digging up parts of the 4.5 acre plot, Stuart Wilson discovered that the field, which he purchased after being convinced that there were secrets hidden below the soil, is actually the site of a lost medieval city.

Israel

Islamic guards try to boot guide for saying ‘Temple Mount’ on Temple Mount timesofisrael

Islamic authorities managing the Temple Mount attempted to have a veteran Israeli archaeologist ejected from the Jerusalem flashpoint holy site on Sunday for using the term “Temple Mount” in a lecture to American students. Waqf guards brought him to Israeli police at the site to complain, and the police, while saying there were no legal grounds to eject him, advised him to refrain from using the phrase “Temple Mount” for the rest of the group’s visit.

Robots

Mayfield Robotics Announces Kuri, a $700 Mobile Home Robot spectrum.ieee.org v

Besides mobility, what makes Kuri heykuri unique is the fact that it has no display (besides a color-changing light on its chest), and that it doesn’t even try to talk to you, as Pepper and Jibo do. There’s speech recognition, but Kuri won’t talk back, instead relying on a variety of beepy noises and its expressive head and eyes to communicate. Essentially, it’s R2-D2-ing, which is a verb now, meaning to have effective non-speech interactions.
