Israel

[OPINION, Caroline Glick] Israel rises in the East jpost

There was something poetic about the events that bookended the past week of diplomacy. This week began with French President François Hollande’s “peace” conference and ended with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s state visit to Moscow.

Very well written reality check.

[OPINION] We were given the Torah, but have we received it? jpost w!

But is this all that Shavuot is about? It’s great to know How To Make the Ultimate Blintzes, but if we consider this the pinnacle of the celebration of the holiday then we are missing out on the real meaning of the giving of the Torah and how it can help us here and now.

Occassionally I include articles like this from Jewish authors, reflecting on a particular holiday that marks a Biblical event. It's important for us to remember that though God has promised to save the nation of Israel, and though they are back in the land, that they are back as unbelievers and, as all unbelievers, are blinded (2 Cor 4:4) and as prone to replace the God of the Bible with other religions and thoughts of who God is as any other unbelievers (actually, Romans 11:25 indicates a particular partial [and temporary] hardening specifically for the Jews). In this case, I question whether the author has even read the Torah (Gen-Deut) as his version of events is so foreign to what it actually says, that it is almost unreognizable! In fact, the author admits it's not the Torah, but Kabbalah he plans to study, which explains alot. The 'g'od he is in contact with is not Yahwah.

Jewish men refusing divorce will soon lose places to hide timesofisrael

The new database is intended to prevent men from fleeing Israel and taking up residence in Europe, which Rabbi Eliyahu Maimon, director of the Israeli Rabbinical Courts Division for Agunot told the Haaretz daily is very common.

“By sharing information through this new database, we would hope to prevent the possibility of these men feeling welcome anywhere,” said Maimon.

Saudis' mulled a fatwa on United Nations over blacklist for killing children [in Yemen war] smh.au

The UN announced on Monday it had removed the coalition from its annual child rights blacklist pending a joint review by the organisation and the coalition of child deaths and injuries during the year-long war in Yemen. Ban described the decision as one of his most painful and difficult and said millions of other children likely would suffer if funding for UN programs was cut off.

Saudi UN ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi also reiterated his denials that Riyadh threatened Ban over the blacklist.

UN: Ireland’s abortion ban is cruel, discriminatory to women washingtonpost

The Human Rights Committee, composed of experts from 17 nations led by Fabian Salvioli of Argentina, found that Ireland’s abortion law violates the U.N. International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and called for widespread reform.

As California's aid-in-dying law takes effect, a Burbank man battling cancer sees a new path latimes

The process to obtain the life-ending drug is no simple task. Multiple written and verbal requests need to be made and can take weeks or months to gain approval. Several physicians must be consulted to ensure that no other medical treatment can be done for the patient. Additionally, ill patients must have the mental capacity to administer the drug themselves.

Tech

Welcome to Larry Page’s Secret Flying-Car Factories bloomberg

Three years ago, Silicon Valley developed a fleeting infatuation with a startup called Zee.Aero. The company had set up shop right next to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., which was curious, because Google tightly controls most of the land in the area. Then a reporter spotted patent filings showing Zee.Aero was working on a small, all-electric plane that could take off and land vertically—a flying car.

In the handful of news articles that ensued, all the startup would say was that it wasn’t affiliated with Google or any other technology company. Then it stopped answering media inquiries altogether. Employees say they were even given wallet-size cards with instructions on how to deflect questions from reporters. After that, the only information that trickled out came from amateur pilots, who occasionally posted pictures of a strange-looking plane taking off from a nearby airport.

Modular phones are here, like it or not techcrunch

[One-piece phone's are] not the future according to LG. Or Motorola. Or Google’s Ara team. These companies see consumers swapping widgets and gizmos on and off their phone like it’s some sort futuristic communication device. That’s crazy. I don’t like it. Get off my lawn.

How Is There Internet On The Space Station? forbes

The vast majority of communication with the ISS happens via radio. ... Radio is pretty easy to set up, as you just need to have an antenna and a transmitter. Even more helpfully, the atmosphere doesn’t block radio waves, so you don’t have to worry about the air absorbing the signal you’d like to send out. This also means that the atmosphere won’t get in the way of shooting a signal up into space from the ground.

Elon Musk says he visited the Pentagon to talk about a 'flying metal suit' theverge

Elon Musk has never shied away from comparisons with superhero Tony Stark, but his most recent joke on the subject is pretty on the nose, even for him. Responding to a story from CNN that pondered why the SpaceX founder had met with Secretary of Defense Ash Carter earlier this week, Musk replied in a tweet: "Something about a flying metal suit..." And considering the Pentagon's official description of the visit — Musk was apparently there to talk about "innovation" — that gloss might not be too far off.
