Apostasy

Hallelujah! Emoji Bible brings Christianity into the digital age thememo

Why read scripture in boring old Oxford English, or any of the other 531 bog-standard languages it comes in, when you can read it in jazzy picture symbols instead?

Abortion

The abortion ruling no one knew about: Georgia's 20-week ban cnn

Medical

Gene therapy drug approval granted to GSK bbc

The treatment is for an illness called ADA-SCID which prevents babies from fighting off everyday infections.

This is the first approval for a genetic therapy granted to a large multinational drug company, GSK.

DNA

DNA 'tape recorder' to trace cell history bbc

The molecular tape recorder developed by Prof Shendure's team at the University of Washington in Seattle, US, is a length of DNA inserted into the genome that contains a series of edit points which can be changed throughout an organism's life.

Each edit records a permanent mark on the tape that is inherited by all of a cell's descendants. By examining the number and pattern of all these marks in an adult cell, the team can work back to find its origins.

Architect uses HoloLens to redesign abandoned Detroit property for Venice Biennale 2016 winbeta.org v

...the HoloLens, working in conjunction with a new mixed-reality-supported design software from location-based solution leader Trimble, enables [Professor] Lynn to compare his design model with the actual plant in real-time. In a “wow” moment of the video, holograms of the model can actually blow up to real-world scale, offering a new perspective from the inside of the design. It looks almost magical, awesome, insanely practical, and cements the power of the HoloLens in assisting the designing process, or its potential in many other fields.

The military’s stealth motorcycles washingtonpost

The motorcycles operate at 55 decibels — about the level of an electric toothbrush or typical conversation — yet still can reach 80 mph in speed. The extreme quiet is due to the use of electric motors.

Transit

ROBOT ROACH CAN JUMP UP TO FIVE FEET HIGH popsci

After it reaches its jumping destination, the roach then uses its shell to right itself so it’s ready to leap again. Eventually, the roach bot will get wings, which would help it glide even further during its hops. Eventually, this jumping mechanism could be scaled up to larger robots, too.
