LGBT History Lessons Heading for California Classrooms abcnews.go

The State Board of Education cde.ca.gov unanimously approved those changes in classroom instruction Thursday to comply with the nation's first law requiring public schools to include prominent gay Americans and LGBT rights milestones in history classes.

Do you remember that lesson you learned in school about the danger of rulling parties of some, shall we say, "less free" nations projecting/rewriting history to suit its purposes?

Robotics

This strutting robot is strong, confident and has great shoes wired.co.uk v

DURUS' walk is based on the "heel-strike, toe push-off behaviours that play a key role in human locomotion", the team said, which means it appears to walk in a natural, human way, and also allows it to walk faster and more efficiently.

What Does a Bomb Disposal Robot Actually Do? bbc

According to the Oxford English Dictionary oed, a robot is “a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically”. Bomb disposal robots cannot perform contextual decision-making or operate by themselves. Instead, bomb disposal robots are more accurately defined as drones, much like unmanned vehicles, as they are remotely controlled by a human operator from afar.

The robots are currently installed in just two workstations, but the company says that it's reviewing an extension of the program and may roll them out around the world.

BACTERIAL WIND TURBINES COULD POWER THE NANOBOTS OF THE FUTURE popsci

The idea is that one day, researchers can place a network of rotors in a fluid with plenty of bacteria suspended in it. The movement of the bacteria turns the rotors just like wind moves turbines at a wind farm, and the movement of the rotors can then (at least in theory) provide a consistent, reliable power to a new generation of nanotechnology.

Scientists Take Another Step Towards Creating an Invisibility Cloak thescienceexplorer

Publishing their work in Scientific Reports, the researchers coated a curved surface with a nano composite medium that contains seven distinct layers. The electric property of each layer varies depending on its position, and the effect “cloaks” an object which would have normally caused a wave to be scattered.

First virus-hunter in space will test DNA-decoding device cbsnews

"We're really interested in how this works in microgravity nasa.gov. It's never been done before," [Kate Rubins] said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, four days after arriving at the International Space Station.

Drones

This scientist can control a swarm of drones with his thoughts digitaltrends v

As unbelievable as it sounds, this is exactly what researchers at Arizona State University asu.edu have developed — with technology that allows one person to control multiple robotic drones simply by thinking about different tasks. To do this, the operator wears a skull cap which records electrical brain activity through 128 electrodes, and outputs instructions to a computer, which then relays information to the drones via Bluetooth.

Japan

Japan's Emperor Akihito not preparing to abdicate, palace insists theguardian

Palace observers said NHK and Kyodo News were unlikely to have run the story unless it had come from impeccable sources inside the palace. The claims were lent more weight after the Yomiuri Shimbun, a conservative broadsheet with close ties to official sources, said the government had been secretly reviewing a possible abdication in light of Akihito’s age and the state of his health.

China to build nuclear power stations on disputed islands in South China Sea independent.co.uk

The China National Nuclear Corporation cnnc (CNNC) made the announcement just two days after the Hague-based tribunal concluded China had “no legal basis” for its claim to almost all of the South China Sea.

Israel’s UN Ambassador: Improved Ties With Africa to Bolster Support for Israel at Biased UN 5tjt

He continued: “For many decades, Israel has suffered under a bias at the UN because we have been greatly outnumbered in almost every forum. One byproduct has been the Palestinian attempts to circumvent direct negotiations through international bodies. Better relations between Israel and Africa could mitigate this escape hatch and encourage the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table.”

EXCLUSIVE: Iran conducts 4th missile test since signing nuke deal foxnews

The test, in violation of a UN resolution, failed shortly after liftoff when the missile exploded, sources said. The effort occurred on the evening of July 11-12 near the Iranian city of Saman, an hour west of Isfahan, where Iran has conducted similar ballistic missile tests in the past.

Terroism

Facing terror at home, Middle East leaders increasingly condemning terror in West washingtonpost

“We are all witnessing that for terrorists, there are no differences between Turkey and France, Iraq and Belgium, or Saudi Arabia and America.” That’s how Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Thursday evening’s terrorist attack in the French city of Nice, which killed scores of people at a Bastille Day theatlantic fireworks celebration.

Just over two weeks ago, he had to grapple with suicide attacks that rocked Istanbul’s international airport, killing 45 people. Call it the new norm.
