Controversial religious activist enters Israel’s parliament washingtonpost
For years, Yehuda Glick has pushed for greater Jewish access to Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site — promoting an ideology that has unnerved Palestinians and made him the target of an assassination attempt. Now, as a new member of Israel’s parliament, Glick is vowing to use his office to press his cause, bringing his explosive campaign to the nation’s corridors of power.
“Twenty years ago, Temple Mount activists were considered totally delusional, extreme, marginal. Today, half of the Knesset’s members agree with the basis of what I express,” Glick, 51, told The Associated Press in an interview.

It's doubtful that Syrian President Bashar Assad will continue to rule Syria in the future, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday as he spoke with Moscow’s Jewish community at the end of his two-day visit there.
But he clarified that Israel is not involved in any attempts to unseat Assad and that it is involved in the Syrian conflict only to the extant that is necessary to protect Israeli interests.
[OPINION] Why Is Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu Warming to Russia's Vladimir Putin? newsweek
Far from being traditional bedfellows, the Kremlin and Tel Aviv did not even maintain direct channels with one another until a quarter of a century ago. The Soviet Union perceived Israel as a U.S.-backed state and even motioned that the U.N. equate Zionism to racism in 1975. Israel, meanwhile, perceived Moscow as a backer of regional foes such as Syria and Egypt.

Gene Editing to Alter Whole Species Gets Limited Backing nytimes
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on Wednesday endorsed research on a technology known as “gene drive,” which gives humans the power for the first time to alter or eliminate entire populations of organisms in the wild — like mosquitoes, mice or plants — through deliberate genetic manipulation.
But the report...underscores that there is not enough evidence about gene drives to justify the release of an altered living thing beyond the laboratory or controlled field experiments. Scientists and environmental advocates alike noted that while the report did a good job of laying out the many questions raised by gene drives, it did not provide many answers.
